Emergency supply kit
Help keep your family safe before disaster strikes by making sure you have everything you need in your emergency supply kit.

Your kit should contain enough food, water and supplies for at least three days

  • You'll need at least one gallon of water per person per day.
  • Non-perishable canned goods and high energy foods such as peanut butter and trail mix that do not require refrigeration or special prepartion
  • A manual can opener
  • A portable, battery-powered radio or television and extra batteries
  • A flashlight and extra batteries
  • A first aid kit
  • Photocopies of insurance information, credit and identification cards, drivers licenses and passports
  • Cash and coins
  • Special needs items, such as prescription medications, eye glasses, contact lens solutions, and hearing aid batteries
  • Sanitation and hygiene items such as moist towelettes and toilet paper
  • Matches in a waterproof container
  • A whistle
  • Extra clothing
  • Items for infants, such as formula, diapers, bottles and pacifiers
  • Other items to meet your unique family needs
 
Tips
Be sure to maintain your family disater kit throughout the year. Here are some tips to keep your supplies in good condition:
  • Store your kit in a cool, dry place.
  • Throw out any canned goods that become swollen, dented or corroded.
  • Change stored food and water supplies every six months.
  • Keep items in airtight plastic bags and place your entire kit in one or two easy-to-carry containers such as a trashcan, camping backpack or duffel bag.
  • Re-think your needs every year and update your kit as your family needs change.
  • Keep this kit in a designated place and have it ready in case you have to leave your home quickly. Make sure all family members know where the kit is kept.
