IS THE HOUSTONPBS SPELLING BEE AFFILIATED WITH THE SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE?
Yes, HoustonPBS is a partnering sponsor with the Scripps National Spelling Bee. The HoustonPBS Spelling Bee is the third largest local spelling bee in the country with 1000+ schools participating from 42 Texas counties. Through a series of school bees, regional bees, and the final HoustonPBS Bee, the top two spellers advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee in Washington DC. HOW DOES MY CHILD PARTICIPATE IN THE SPELLING BEE?
There is no single student enrollment. Spelling Bee participation is through schools. All schools are eligible: public, private, charter, virtual, and homeschools. To see if your school is enrolled, click here, https://secure.spellingbee.com/enrollment/check . If your school is not yet enrolled, ask someone in your school office if your school is participating. Teachers and administrators enroll their schools through the 2013-14 Scripps National Spelling Bee website, http://www.spellingbee.com/. The school enrollment deadline is November 30, 2013.
IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE/GRADE REQUIREMENT?
At the HoustonPBS Spelling Bee and at the Scripps National Spelling Bee, there is no minimum grade for participation.
However, school or school districts may set a minimum grade for their spelling bees. They are in control of that decision.
DO GRADES COMPETE TOGETHER?
Yes, a mixture of grades and ages do compete together.
MAY A SCHOOL ENROLL USING A PURCHASE ORDER?
Scripps National Spelling Bee does not accept purchase orders, only check or credit card. When you choose the ‘pay-by-check option’, the system will generate a printable, custom, itemized invoice (including $120 enrollment fee and $7.50 charge for check processing). The custom invoice will be emailed to you or whomever initiates the enrollment. STEP-BY-STEP TO ENROLL YOUR SCHOOL
Enroll your school by November 30, 2013 using the Scripps National Spelling Bee website; $120 fee for enrollment/materials
1) Go to www.spellingbee.com , Click "Enroll Now" in the upper-right-hand corner.
2) Enter the zip code of your school.
3) Select your school.
4) Click the "Submit" button at bottom of page.
5) Write down your password and keep it where you can find it. Complete the form and payment: credit card or check. There is a processing fee for payment by check. (If the pay-by-check option is selected, the system will generate a custom invoice listing the schools and will email the invoice to the person who initiated the enrollment on behalf of the school. Schools gain access after payment is received.) Scripps National Spelling Bee does not accept purchase orders.
6) Access to your SNSB account is open after SNSB receives your payment.

BY WHAT DATE MUST A SCHOOL SPELLING BEE BE COMPLETED?
Each school organizes its own bee and sets its own spelling bee date.
Schools are encouraged to complete school bees before the Winter Break.
Please schedule your school bee to occur no later than January 17, 2014.
BY WHAT DATE MUST THE SCHOOL CHAMPION BE REPORTED TO SCRIPPS NATIONAL SPELLING BEE?
Report your champion information as soon as your bee is complete, but no later than January 17, 2014.
Log-in to your Scripps National Spelling Bee account, using the Scripps National Spelling Bee website, www.spellingbee.com, to report your school champion information.

HOME SCHOOL ENROLLMENT
HOME SCHOOLS IN HARRIS COUNTY
Do not register at spellingbee.com. You must participate in the SETHSA (South East Texas Home School Association) Spelling Bee. The SETHSA Spelling Bee has unique differences. Please check with them about these specific differences, 281-756-9792; email@example.com, www.sethsa.org Contact SETHSA by November 15 and let them know you want to participate in the bee. The first level of competition is held through SETHSA's 'area support group' spelling bees. The winners of the area support group bees will advance to the SETHSA Spelling Bee. The winner of the SETHSA Spelling Bee will advance to the HoustonPBS Championship.
HOME SCHOOLS OUTSIDE OF HARRIS COUNTY
Individual Home School with No Support Group
Enroll and pay for your family at www.spellingbee.com. You family is considered a school. Download the Study Words and Pronouncer's Guide from your account at spellingbee.com. If you have more than one speller in your family, you will need to determine the spelling champion for your family. Log-in to your account at spellingbee.com and register your family champion no later than January 17. Your champion will compete in a Regional Bee in February 2014. (You will be notified of the place and time.)
Individual Home School with Home School Support Groups
You will participate through your Home School Support Group, which is considered a school. The Home School Support Group must be enrolled at www.spellingbee.com. Get the Study Words and bee schedule/procedure from your Support Group Spelling Bee Coordinator. The Home School Support Group must produce a bee champion no later than January 17. The Support Group champion will compete in a Regional Bee in February 2014.
(If you live outside of Harris County, but you are a SETHSA member, you have the choice to compete in the SETHSA Spelling Bee or in your Regional Spelling Bee. You may not participate in both. See above paragraph, 'HOME SCHOOLS IN HARRIS COUNTY', if you want to participate in the SETSHA Bee.)

The program is open to students who have neither turned 16 nor passed beyond the eighth grade, and who attend schools that are officially enrolled with Scripps National Spelling Bee. A complete listing of eligibility requirements may be found here, http://www.spellingbee.com/eligibility.

WILL VOCABULARY BE INCLUDED IN THE SPELLING BEES THIS YEAR?
At the 2013 Scripps National Spelling Bee Finals, vocabulary testing was introduced, well received and will continue to be part of future National Finals. Schools now have the option to include vocabulary in their school bees…check with your school bee coordinator. If you advance to compete in a School District Bee, check with your district to find out if vocabulary will be part of the district bee. For Regional Bees and the HoustonPBS Final Bee, vocabulary will NOT be incorporated, these bees will be ‘spelling only’.
