They are often the unsung heroes of medicine – they plan, they implement and they evaluate Health Care - they are nurses. Through the years their skills and responsibilities have grown to encompass so much more…and in celebration of this challenging profession we will visit with 3 generations of nurses – all from the same Houston family – that of Dr. Denton Cooley. This week on Houston 8, a look at the changing roles of nurses and how, with the raising costs of health care, the medical profession depends on them more and more.

Mary Plumb Senkel, BSN, RN
Mary Plumb Senkel is an Emergency Room Nurse at Memorial Hermann Hospital. She graduated in 2008 from the University of Texas at Austin with a B.A. in Art History.  During her senior year, she changed her focus to nursing and completed her nursing prerequisites. After UT, she moved to Baltimore where she received her BSN from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing, her grandmother’s alma mater.  Mary is currently a student at UTSON where she will complete a Masters in Nursing with a focus as a Family Nurse Practitioner and Emergency Practitioner in May 2012.  The youngest of four siblings, Mary grew up in Houston. She is married to law student, Nick Senkel.  In her spare time, Mary visits art galleries. 

Louise Thomas Cooley
Louise Thomas Cooley grew up in Frederick Maryland, the daughter of a general surgeon. She attended Northfield Mount Hermon School for Girls. She graduated in 1945 from The College of William and Mary with a BS in Psychology.  She received her nursing degree from Johns Hopkins School of Nursing in 1948. She was head nurse on a surgical floor at Johns Hopkins Hospital.  She is married to heart surgeon, Denton Cooley. She is the mother of five daughters, grandmother to sixteen and great grandmother of four (and another on the way).  Mrs. Cooley’s belief that “nurses’ training is training for life” makes her a lifelong advocate for a career in nursing.

Susan M. Cooley, Ph.D., R.N., C.P.N.P.
A Pediatric Nurse Practitioner, Dr. Susan Cooley is the Vice President for Clinical Services for RediClinic, one of the nation’s largest providers of retail-based convenient health care services.  Having been a faculty member in the Department of Pediatrics at UT Medical School Houston for over 30 years, Dr. Cooley retired from that position in 2007.  Academic degrees include both BSN and MPH from the University of Texas. She received her PNP from University of California, San Francisco and completed her PhD in Nursing at Texas Woman’s University.  Dr. Cooley’s first nursing job, at the Albert Schweitzer Hospital in Haiti, prepared her for a career caring for needy families. Dr. Cooley helped create a model health care system that pairs health-related programs. A native Houstonian, Dr. Cooley has four grown children and two grandchildren.  Dr. Cooley has many interests. She is a passionate photographer and especially enjoys photographing children around the world.
