About the Show:
Produced by HoustonPBS, Red, White and Blue is a weekly political affairs program covering local, state and national politics. David A. Jones and Gary Polland host the show with moderator Linda Lorelle. The program airs locally on Channel 8 Fridays at 7:30 pm and Sundays at 12:30 pm and is taped at the Melcher Center for Public Broadcasting on the University of Houston Main Campus. The program receives input from the Red, White and Blue Advisory Board.

Gary Polland and David Jones explore the City Issues and the Candidates for the 2011 City of Houston Mayoral Race with Harris County Treasurer Orlando Sanchez and Rice University’s Lena Gohlman Fox Professor, Robert M. Stein; and James Thurmond, Ph.D. Director, Master of Public Administration at the University of Houston. In the 2011 election, Houston City Mayor Annise Parker faces five challengers: Fernando Herrera, Jack O’ Connor, Kevin Simms, Amanda Ulman and Dave Wilson.

At-Large Position 5 - Houston City Council - 2011 Candidates

Houston City Council At-Large Position 5 incumbent, Jolanda Jones, faces three challengers: Jack Christie, Laurie Robinson and Bob Ryan. Gary Polland and David Jones explore the City Issues and the Candidates with Jay K. Aiyer, Nancy Sims, and Paul Bettencourt. Jay K. Aiyer currently manages his own law and consulting firm, The Aiyer Law Firm, specializing in immigration law and education policy. Jay previously worked in the public sector, for Senator Rodney Ellis and Chief of Staff to Mayor Lee P. Brown. Aiyer is an Assistant Professor of Public Policy at the Jordan-Leland School of Public Affairs at Texas Southern University and is the Assistant Director of the Barbara Jordan Institute, a Policy Research Center specializing in urban public policy. Nancy Sims is Senior Vice President with Pierpont Communications, Inc. Prior to joining Pierpont, Nancy owned Quantum Consults and advised many of Texas’ leading political figures. Nancy is also an Adjunct Professor of Political Science at the University of Houston. Paul Bettencourt, former Harris County Tax Assessor-Collector, is with Bettencourt Tax Advisors, LLC..

District J - Houston City Council - 2011 Candidates

David Jones explores the City Issues and the Candidates running for Houston City Council – District J with Marc Campos, President of Campos Communications; Sue Schechter, former Texas State Representative and former Harris County Democratic Party Chair; and Bill King, an investor and principal in several companies maintains an online information resource “Bill King – A Public Policy Discussion” along with his editorial articles in The Houston Chronicle. District J is a new district drawn as a so-called Hispanic opportunity district. There are three candidates running for District J: Rodrigo Canedo, Mike Laster and Criselda Romero

District C - Houston City Council - 2011 Candidates

No incumbent, and a redrawn map that now takes in neighborhoods in Montrose, the Heights and communities around Rice University that have caused some to dub it the “Hipstrict” for its progressive, urban ethic will be discussed by Gary Polland and David Jones, hosts of the HoustonPBS political affairs program, Red, White and Blue, and their guests, Paul Bettencourt, Dr. D.
