Toll-free number will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Assistance to homeowners and renters can include grants to help pay for temporary housing, minor home repairs and other serious-related expenses. Homeowners should first call their insurance agent and make an assessment of the degree of damage before calling the toll-free number. It normally takes seven to 10 days after applications are made to have damages verified by FEMA housing inspectors and another week or more before qualified applicants will receive assistance checks.

Information to have available:

  • Current phone number
  • Address of damaged property and address of where the victim is staying temporarily
  • Social security number
  • General list of damages and losses you suffered
  • Good directions to the property that was damaged
  • If insured, your insurance policy number or agent's and company name
  • General financial information

Call to Apply for Assistance 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The speech or hearing impaired may call (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. You may also register online at www.fema.gov/register.shtml

  • For use ONLY by people in designated federal disaster areas.
  • If you get a busy signal, try to call in the evening after 6:00 p.m. or on the weekends when call volumes tend to be lighter.
  • If you are unable to find the information you are seeking, call FEMA's Helpline at 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). The speech or hearing impaired may call (TTY) 1-800-462-7585. Refer to the application number the registrars gave you when you applied.
