African American Historical and Genealogical Society, Inc. http://htown.aahgs.org/ As a premier institution for African American family history & genealogical research in the greater Houston Area, AAHGS-H-Town Chapter (unofficially the Willie Lee Gay-H-Town Chapter) primary task is to nurture the interest and collaboration of genealogical & family history research, with emphasis on the African descendant population (but not limited to). The Chapter further seeks to preserve local history and the cultural heritage of people of African descent in the State of Texas.
African American Studies Program, University of Houston http://www.class.uh.edu/aas/ Mission: development of the knowledge of the cultural and historical heritage and contributions of people of African descent in America, throughout the greater Diaspora and on the Continent. The program develops, promotes and enhances the knowledge and information of the discipline as well as the collective consciousness of African descended people, which will in turn lead to the growth and prosperity of strong communities and a powerful nation.
American Cowboy Museum at Taylor Stevenson Ranch 11822 Almeda; 713.433.4441 According to most estimates, Black cowboys accounted for about 1/4 to 1/3 of all cowboys in the Old West. The mission of the American Cowboy Museum (ACM) is to preserve the western heritage of native American, Blacks, Hispanics and women. It is housed in an area of the Century-Euro Taylor-Stevenson Ranch. The ACM offers tours and a historical exhibit.
Antioch Missionary Baptist Church http://www.antiochhouston.org/ In January of 1866 just seven months after slaves were freed in Texas, on June 19, 1865, a small group of freed slaves organized the first African American Baptist Church in Houston, Texas.

Dikembe Mutombo Foundation http://www.dmf.org/ This charitable organization, established by the Congolese NBA Houston Rockets player, Dikembe Mutombo, works to improve the health, education and quality of life for the people of the DR Congo. The foundation is building a hospital in the capital city, Kinshasa. It will be the first new hospital in the Congo in nearly 40 years.

The Fifth Ward Enrichment Program Incorporated (FWEP) http://www.fwepinc.org/ Founded in 1984, The Fifth Ward Enrichment Program is a youth leadership and development program that offers more than 20 support services to deter chemical dependency, teen pregnancy, school delinquency and dropouts, while promoting self-discipline, personal accountability, and self-esteem. These services are provided year-round through School-based Projects and the Teen Enterprise Center (TEC), an incubator for youth entrepreneurial-skill development.
