Living with the Lion: Childhood Cancer a HoustonPBS Production, companion piece to A Lion in the House Previously Aired Imagine finding out your child has cancer. What would you do? Who do you turn to for help? What if you don’t have health insurance? How are you going to pay for treatment? How do you explain to your child what’s happening to them? Every year thousands of families face these difficult questions. “Living with the Lion”, a HoustonPBS production, takes a closer look at the physical, emotional and spiritual challenges these families are confronting every day. The program will exam how disparities in diagnosis, treatment, social services and support play a significant role in the likelihood of survival. When a child does survive, there are still a host of physical and emotional issues they must confront. We’ll examine how one young person is dealing with those challenges and talk with health care professionals about the warning signs, the need for better pain management, as well as the ultimate challenge of how to find the strength to cope with the loss of a child. Learn about the need for culturally sensitive care and how to find the resources available in Houston for families in need.
