Each year, as millions of viewers tune in to the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee live on television, millions of students are inspired to participate in the nation’s largest and longest-running educational competition. HoustonPBS is proud to once again bring the opportunity for students to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee program.

The Scripps National Spelling Bee begins at the school level, and schools must enroll in order to participate. The materials and enrollment fee for the 2010 school year is $99. The original deadline has past. Late enrollment is available until December 18, 2009. For more details, please visit spellingbee.com.

During the fall and winter, schools conduct spelling bee programs at the classroom, grade, and/or school level, and send their spelling champions to the Regional/District Bees which occur during the month of February. The highest ranking spellers from the Regional/District Bees advance to the HoustonPBS Spelling Bee which will take place on Saturday, March 27, 2010. The champion of the HoustonPBS Spelling Bee wins an all-expenses-paid trip to compete in the 2010 Scripps National Spelling Bee held in May.
