onor Squadrons tells the story of World War II aircraft that are still flying today -- and the organizations and individuals who invest time, energy, and money into keeping these icons alive for future generations to see, hear, and touch.
Of the half-million planes that flew during World War II, less than 6,000 remain today. And of those, only a handful are still flying. Fighting to keep them intact and flying is the Confederate Air Force, made up of some 8,000 international members who donate everything from their mechanical and maintenance efforts to piloting skills.
Featured in Honor Squadrons are interviews with World War II veterans George Bush, Lloyd Bentsen, Luftwaffe test pilot Werner Seitz, and Imperial Japanese Navy air cadet Ryu Hatano. Planes featured include the B-17 Texas Raiders during a restoration process, the B-24 All American, the P-51 Mustang, the P-38 Lightning, and the Japanese Zero, among others.
Honor Squadrons was produced by Todd Hewey for HoustonPBS.
